What old bikes are worth money?

Old bikes worth real money are typically rare pre-war machines, low-production factory racers, and first-generation Japanese classics in original or well-documented condition, not just any vintage motorcycle.

The highest-value category tends to be pre-war and early collector bikes: Brough Superior, Vincent, Crocker, early Harley-Davidson and Indian board-track racers, and pre-war British singles and twins routinely bring six figures at auction, with the rarest examples (a documented Vincent Black Lightning or Cyclone board-track racer, for instance) selling well into seven figures. Below that tier, first-generation Japanese icons like the Honda CB750, Kawasaki Z1, and Suzuki two-stroke triples hold strong collector demand, especially in unmolested or matching-numbers condition. Limited-production factory racers and homologation specials (Honda's RC-series, Ducati's Desmosedici GP editions) also command premiums because supply is small and provenance is easy to verify.

For a custom motorcycle specifically, age matters less than the desirability of the donor bike, the quality and reversibility of the build, and how well the modifications are documented. A custom built from a sought-after base model with clean records and quality fabrication can hold real value; a heavily modified bike with no paper trail is usually worth less than the sum of its parts to most buyers, since customization narrows the pool of interested buyers.
